A Hohmann transfer orbit is an elliptical orbit used to move between two circular orbits around the same central body. It is achieved by impulsive maneuvers (short bursts of acceleration) at the initial and final orbits. Under such impulsive acceleration and in the absence of gravity assists, a Hohmann orbit expends the least amount of energy of any elliptical transfer orbit. However, transfer time between the orbits is relatively long.
